Upadeshasahasri 17.18

17.18 Shankaracharya

svapne yadvatprabodhe ca bahiścāntastathaiva ca | ālekhyādhyayane yadvattadanyonyadhiyodbhavam ||

As in dream, so in waking; outside and inside alike. As in a picture and in reading, it arises from the notion of one [called up] by the other.

Meaning today and context

A drawing makes us think of a name, a word makes us picture a thing. Our everyday world is woven out of such mutual cues, and seeing this makes us hold our interpretations more lightly.

Shankaracharya generalises: in dream and in waking, outside and inside alike, word and thing arise from the mind's notion of each other, as when a picture calls up a name or written letters call up a meaning.
