Upadeshasahasri 17.19

17.19 Shankaracharya

yadāyaṃ kalpayedbhedaṃ tatkāmaḥ sanyathākratuḥ | yatkāmastatkraturbhūtvā kṛtaṃ yattatprapadyate ||

When he imagines difference, he comes to desire that [thing], and as is his desire so is his resolve. Having become of that resolve which matches his desire, he attains whatever he has done.

Meaning today and context

What you keep wanting becomes what you decide, and what you decide becomes what you do and where you end up. It is worth looking honestly at what you desire, because it is quietly steering your life.

Shankaracharya echoes Bṛhadāraṇyaka 4.4.5: once a person imagines difference, desire forms resolve, resolve forms action, and action forms what one meets.
