Upadeshasahasri 17.21

17.21 Shankaracharya

vidyāvidye śrutiprokte ekatvānyadhiyau hi naḥ | tasmātsarvaprayatnena śāstre vidyā vidhīyate ||

The knowledge and ignorance spoken of in śruti are, for us, the notion of oneness and the notion of otherness. Therefore the scripture enjoins knowledge [to be gained] with every effort.

In this teaching, ignorance is not a lack of information but the habit of feeling separate. The work, then, is to keep turning towards a sense of unity, in yourself and with others.

Shankaracharya defines the knowledge and ignorance the Upanishads speak of, and concludes that scripture enjoins knowledge to be pursued with every effort.
