śārīrāditapaḥ kuryāttadviśuddhyarthamuttamam | manaādisamādhānaṃ tattaddehaviśoṣaṇam ||
For its purification one should practise austerity of body and the rest. The highest [austerity] is the concentration of the mind and [the senses], which wears down each of the [gross and subtle] bodies.
Austerity here is mainly mental discipline. 'Wearing down the body' is not advice to fast, starve or harm oneself, and is not dietary or medical advice; if you are struggling with food or self-harm, call Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
The austerity that matters most is not punishing the body but gathering a scattered mind. Learning to stay with one thing at a time is itself a discipline that weakens old habits.
Continuing from 17.22 on purifying the mind: Shankaracharya names austerity of body, speech and mind, and calls the highest austerity the collecting of the mind and senses.
