suṣuptākhyaṃ tamo'jñānaṃ bījaṃ svapnaprabodhayoḥ | svātmabodhapradagdhaṃ syādbījaṃ dagdhaṃ yathābhavam ||
The darkness called deep sleep is ignorance, the seed of dream and waking. Burnt by the awakening to one's own Self, it becomes a seed incapable of sprouting, as a burnt seed is.
Meaning today and context
A roasted seed can sit in the soil and never sprout. Real understanding works like that on old patterns: they may still appear, but they no longer take root and grow.
Shankaracharya explains deep sleep as the seed-darkness of ignorance from which dream and waking sprout, and says self-knowledge burns that seed.
