abaddhacakṣuṣo nāsti māyā māyāvino'pi vā | baddhākṣasyaiva sā māyāmāyāvyeva tato bhavet ||

For one whose eyes are not bound there is no illusion, nor even a magician. Only for one whose eyes are bound is there that illusion; therefore [only for him] would the magician be a magician.

Meaning today and context

A trick works only on someone who has not seen through it. Many fears and stories about ourselves have power only while we believe them; once seen through, they stop being frightening.

The magician image continues: a magic show deceives only the spectators whose eyes are 'bound' by the spell. For one who is not deceived there is no illusion and, in effect, no magician either.
