Upadeshasahasri 17.32

17.32 Shankaracharya

aśabdāditvato nāsya grahaṇaṃ cendriyairbhavet | sukhādibhyastathānyatvādbuddhyā vāpi kathaṃ bhavet ||

Since it has no sound and the rest, it cannot be grasped by the senses; and since it is other than pleasure and the like, how could it be [grasped] even by the intellect?

Meaning today and context

You cannot see awareness, hear it, or think it like a thought. This is why looking for the Self as one more experience keeps failing; the next verses show where it is found.

An objection is raised within the argument: if the Self must be known directly, how? Not by the senses, since it has no sound or other sense qualities; nor apparently by the intellect, since it is unlike pleasure and the other things the intellect grasps.
