Upadeshasahasri 17.34

17.34 Shankaracharya

bhānorbimbaṃ yathā cauṣṇyaṃ jale dṛṣṭaṃ na cāmbhasaḥ | buddhau bodho na taddharmastathaiva syādvidharmataḥ ||

Just as the sun's disc and its heat are seen in water but are not [properties] of the water, so awareness in the intellect is not its property, since [the intellect] is of a different nature.

Meaning today and context

The mind lights up because awareness shines in it, not because the mind owns the light. When the mind is dull or troubled, the light that knows it is still not dimmed.

Shankaracharya refines the reflection image: the sun's image and warmth appear in water but belong to the sun, not the water. Likewise awareness appears in the intellect but is not a property of the intellect, which is of a different nature.
