cakṣuryuktā dhiyo vṛttiryā tāṃ paśyannaluptadṛk | dṛṣṭerdraṣṭā bhavedātmā śruteḥ śrotā tathā śruteḥ ||
Seeing the mental act joined with the eye, the Self, whose seeing is never lost, is the seer of seeing; likewise the hearer of hearing, as the śruti says.
Meaning today and context
You can notice that you are seeing, and notice that you are hearing. What notices is never itself one of those acts. Resting as that noticing is a steady place to stand when experiences become intense.
Shankaracharya explains the Upanishadic phrases 'the seer of seeing' and 'the hearer of hearing' (Bṛhadāraṇyaka 3.4.2): the Self, whose seeing is never lost, witnesses the mind's act of seeing through the eye.
