Upadeshasahasri 17.39

17.39 Shankaracharya

vyavadhānāddhi pārokṣyaṃ lokadṛṣṭeranātmanaḥ | dṛṣṭerātmasvarūpatvātpratyakṣaṃ brahma tatsmṛtam ||

Indirectness belongs to the not-Self seen by ordinary sight, because of something standing between. Since seeing is the very nature of the Self, that Brahman is held to be immediate.

Everything else reaches you through some channel: eyes, ears, memory, news. Your own awareness needs no channel. It is the nearest thing there is, which is perhaps why it is so easy to overlook.

Shankaracharya explains why Brahman is called 'immediate and direct': ordinary objects are known indirectly, through an intervening means such as a sense organ, but seeing is the very nature of the Self.
