ātmalābhātparo nānyo lābhaḥ kaścana vidyate | yadarthā vedavādāśca smārtāścāpi tu yāḥ kriyāḥ ||
There is no gain whatever higher than gaining the Self. It is for its sake that the statements of the Veda exist, and the rites taught in the smṛti too.

We chase degrees, jobs, money and approval, each promising to complete us. Shankara says the gain all of them are secretly aiming at is being at ease with what you are; nothing outside can stand in for that.
The argument begins: of everything a person can gain, gaining the Self is the highest, and all Vedic and traditional practice exists for its sake.
