Upadeshasahasri 17.40

17.40 Shankaracharya

na hi dīpāntarāpekṣā yadvaddīpaprakāśane | bodhasyātmasvarūpatvānna bodho'nyastatheṣyate ||

Just as no other lamp is needed to light up a lamp, so, since awareness is the very nature of the Self, no other awareness [to know it] is accepted.

Meaning today and context

You do not need anyone's confirmation that you exist and are aware; it is self-evident. Whatever others say about you, that basic presence never needed their light to shine.

Shankaracharya gives the lamp image: a lamp needs no second lamp to be seen. Since awareness is the Self's own nature, no further awareness is needed to know it.
