Upadeshasahasri 17.41

17.41 Shankaracharya

viṣayatvaṃ vikāritvaṃ nānātvaṃ vā na hīṣyate | na heyo nāpyupādeya ātmā nānyena vā tataḥ ||

Being an object, being subject to change, or being many: none of these is accepted [of the Self]. Therefore the Self is neither to be rejected nor to be acquired, by itself or by another.

Meaning today and context

What you most truly are cannot be won or lost, given to you or taken away. That leaves room for effort in life without the fear that your basic worth is at stake in every outcome.

Shankaracharya sums up: the Self is never an object, never changes, and is never many; so it can be neither given up nor acquired, by itself or by anyone else.
