Upadeshasahasri 17.42

17.42 Shankaracharya

sabāhyābhyantaro'jīrṇo janmamṛtyujarātigaḥ | ahamātmeti yo vetti kuto nveva bibheti saḥ ||

One who knows 'I am the Self, with no outside or inside, unageing, beyond birth, death and old age': of what, then, could he be afraid?

This verse is about the Self, not an invitation to die or to stop caring for health. If you or someone you know is thinking about death or self-harm, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Most fear is fear of losing something: health, youth, people, life. If you come to see that what you are is not the thing that ages, fear can loosen its grip even while you still take care of the body and those you love.

The fruit of the argument: one who knows himself as the ageless Self beyond birth, death and old age has nothing to fear.
