daśāhāśaucakāryāṇāṃ pārivrājye nivartanam | yathā jñānasya saṃprāptau tadvajjātyādikarmaṇām ||
Just as, on taking up the wandering life of renunciation, the observances of the ten days of impurity come to an end, so, when knowledge is gained, the actions that depend on caste and the like come to an end.
'Caste' (jāti) here means the social labels the body carries; the verse says they do not touch the Self. It never supports ranking or excluding anyone by birth. This speaks of the formal renunciate (sannyasin). For most people it means inner freedom from 'I am the doer' and 'this is mine', not leaving family, work or duties undone.

Roles and labels come with duties that fit the role. Knowing who you are beneath every role does not make you careless; it means the labels no longer define you.
Shankaracharya, in the seventeenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on right thinking), compares the end of caste-based duties for the knower to a ritual rule: a renunciate is exempt from the ten days of ritual impurity that follow a death or birth in the family.
