Upadeshasahasri 17.48

17.48 Shankaracharya

ātmarūpavidheḥ kāryaṃ kriyādibhyo nivartanam | na sādhyaṃ sādhanaṃ vātmā nityatṛptaḥ śrutermataḥ ||

The effect of the teaching about the Self's nature is turning back from actions and their aids. The Self is neither something to be achieved nor a means [to anything]; it is ever content, as the scripture holds.

Meaning today and context

You are not a project to be completed. The Self is not something you earn by effort; recognising that it is already content takes away the pressure to become someone else.

Shankaracharya, in the seventeenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on right thinking), argues against the ritualist (Mimamsa) view that teaching about the Self must lead to some act: its only result is turning away from action.
