Upadeshasahasri 17.49

17.49 Shankaracharya

utpādyāpyavikāryāṇi saṃskāryaṃ ca kriyāphalam | nāto'nyatkarmaṇaḥ kāryaṃ tyajettasmātsasādhanam ||

What action yields is something to be produced, reached, changed or refined; action has no other kind of result. Therefore [the seeker] should give it up together with its means.

'Giving up action' is addressed to the renunciate seeker of Self-knowledge. It is not advice to stop working, abandon duties or neglect family.

Meaning today and context

Effort can make, get, change or polish things, and that is its proper place. But who you are is none of these, so no amount of doing can produce it; it is seen, not built.

Shankaracharya, in the seventeenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on right thinking), lists the only four kinds of result action can have, to show that none of them can be the Self.
