Upadeshasahasri 17.5

17.5 Shankaracharya

ātmārtho'pi hi yo lābhaḥ sukhāyeṣṭo viparyayaḥ | ātmalābhaḥ paraḥ prokto nityatvādbrahmavedibhiḥ ||

Any gain one seeks for oneself, wanting it for happiness, turns into its opposite. The gain of the Self is called the highest by the knowers of Brahman because it is eternal.

Meaning today and context

Things we get for the sake of happiness come with worry about losing them, and they do end. This is not a reason to stop working for a good life, but a reason not to rest your whole sense of worth on what can be taken away.

Shankaracharya explains why gaining the Self is highest: every other gain sought for happiness turns into its opposite, while the Self is eternal.
