Because [the love of outward things] ends in pain, is passing, and is anyway for the sake of the Self, the seeker of truth should draw back the love that goes outward, gather it in the Self, and take refuge in a teacher.

Everything we love outside, we love because it makes us feel whole, yet it fades and often hurts. Turning that love towards understanding yourself, with someone wiser to guide you, is the start of real seeking.
Shankaracharya, in the seventeenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on right thinking), turns to the seeker: having seen why outward pleasures cannot satisfy, he should go to a teacher.
