Upadeshasahasri 17.51

17.51 Shankaracharya

śāntaṃ prājñaṃ tathā muktaṃ niṣkriyaṃ brahmaṇi sthitam | śruterācāryavānveda tadviddhīti smṛtestathā ||

[The teacher should be] calm, wise, free, beyond action, established in Brahman; [this is] from the scripture 'one who has a teacher knows' and likewise from the tradition 'know that [by humble approach]'.

Choose a guide by their calm, clarity and freedom, not by fame or show. Real teaching comes from someone who lives what they teach.

Shankaracharya, in the seventeenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on right thinking), describes the right teacher, citing the Chandogya Upanishad (6.14.2, 'one who has a teacher knows') and the Bhagavad Gita (4.34, 'know that by prostration').
