Upadeshasahasri 17.53

17.53 Shankaracharya

Seeing, touching, hearing, smelling, thinking, knowing and the other powers appear as different through limiting adjuncts, even though they are all of the nature of consciousness.

Meaning today and context

Your seeing, hearing and thinking feel like separate things, but one awareness lights them all. The variety is in the instruments, not in the awareness.

Shankaracharya, in the seventeenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on right thinking), explains why one consciousness appears as many powers of sense.
