Upadeshasahasri 17.55

17.55 Shankaracharya

anyadṛṣṭiḥ śarīrasthastāvanmātro hyavidyayā | jalendvādyupamābhistu taddharmā ca vibhāvyate ||

Through ignorance [the Self] seems to see things other than itself, to live in the body and to be only as big as the body; and, as the images of the moon in water and the like show, it is imagined to have the qualities of [what it is reflected in].

Meaning today and context

The moon in a rippling pond seems to shake, but the moon is still. When you feel small or shaken, it may be the reflection, the body and mind, that is moving, not you.

Shankaracharya, in the seventeenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on right thinking), explains how the boundless Self comes to seem small and body-bound.
