Upadeshasahasri 17.6

17.6 Shankaracharya

svayaṃ labdhasvabhāvatvāllābhastasya na cānyataḥ | anyāpekṣastu yo lābhaḥ so'nyadṛṣṭisamudbhavaḥ ||

Since its nature is already self-possessed, its gain does not come from anything else. But a gain that depends on something else arises from seeing [things as] other [than oneself].

Meaning today and context

What you are is not a prize waiting somewhere ahead. The feeling that something outside must complete you is itself what the teaching questions.

The argument continues: the Self is not gained from anywhere else, because it is already one's own nature; every gain that depends on something else comes from seeing duality.
