Upadeshasahasri 17.65

17.65 Shankaracharya

vācārambhaṇamātratvātsuṣuptāditrikaṃ tvasat | satyo jñaścāhamityevaṃ satyasandho vimucyate ||

Because they are only a matter of words, the triad of deep sleep, [dream and waking] is unreal. 'I am the real, the knower': one who holds to the truth in this way is freed.

States come and go and are named by their contents; what knows them stays. Holding to that steady knower is what the verse calls holding to truth.

Shankaracharya, in the seventeenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on right thinking), applies the Chandogya teaching (6.1.4) that modifications are 'a mere matter of words', and the image of the man 'who holds to truth' (6.16).
