Upadeshasahasri 17.69

17.69 Shankaracharya

na bāhyaṃ madhyato vāntarvidyate'nyatsvataḥ kvacit | abāhyāntaḥśruteḥ kiṃcittasmācchuddhaḥ svayaṃprabhaḥ ||

Nothing other than oneself exists anywhere, outside, in between or within, according to the scripture 'without outside or inside'; therefore [the Self] is pure and self-luminous.

Meaning today and context

Awareness does not need a lamp to be seen; it is what sees. Nothing can stain it from outside, because for it there is no outside.

Shankaracharya, in the seventeenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on right thinking), cites the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (2.5.19), 'without outside or inside'.
