Upadeshasahasri 17.73

17.73 Shankaracharya

ahameva sadātmajñaḥ śūnyastvanyairyathāmbaram | ityevaṃ satyasaṃdhatvādasaddhātā na badhyate ||

'I alone am always the knower of the Self, empty of everything else, like space': holding to the truth in this way, one who does not take hold of the unreal is not bound.

Meaning today and context

In the old story the truthful man holds the hot axe and is not burned. Holding to what you really are, rather than to stories about yourself, keeps you from being scorched by them.

Shankaracharya, in the seventeenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on right thinking), draws on the Chandogya Upanishad (6.16): the accused man who holds to the truth is not burnt by the hot axe of the ordeal, while the liar is.
