Upadeshasahasri 17.74

17.74 Shankaracharya

kṛpaṇāste'nyathaivāto vidurbrahma paraṃ hi ye | svarāḍyo'nanyadṛksvasthastasya devā asanvaśe ||

Therefore those who know the supreme Brahman otherwise [than as their Self] are pitiable. The one who is self-ruling, who sees nothing other, abiding in himself, has the gods under his sway.

'Pitiable' describes a state of not knowing, not a judgement on any person; it is no reason to look down on anyone.

Meaning today and context

To feel always at the mercy of others is a poor way to live. One who rests in himself is not pushed around by forces outside.

Shankaracharya, in the seventeenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on right thinking), cites the Brihadaranyaka (3.8.10, those who die without knowing are 'pitiable') and the Chandogya (7.25.2, the knower is 'self-ruling').
