Upadeshasahasri 17.76

17.76 Shankaracharya

setuṃ sarvavyavasthānāmahorātrādivarjitam | tiryagūrdhvamadhaḥ sarvaṃ sakṛjjyotiranāmayam ||

[That Self is] the bridge that holds all orders apart, untouched by day and night and the like; it is across, above, below, everything; light that shines once for all; free of all affliction.

Meaning today and context

What you are does not go through good days and bad days. Like a bridge across changing waters, it holds steady while time flows beneath it.

Shankaracharya, in the seventeenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on right thinking), continues the description of the Self begun in verse 75, using images from the Upanishads (the bridge, Chandogya 8.4.1; 'once-for-all light', 8.4.2).
