Upadeshasahasri 17.77

17.77 Shankaracharya

dharmādharmavinirmuktaṃ bhūtabhavyātkṛtākṛtāt | svamātmānaṃ paraṃ vidyādvimuktaṃ sarvabandhanaiḥ ||

One should know one's own Self as the supreme, free of merit and demerit, of past and future, of what is done and not done, released from every bond.

Being 'beyond merit and demerit' is about the Self, not a licence to ignore right and wrong or to escape making amends. If guilt is overwhelming, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Past mistakes and future worries weigh on the mind, but the awareness that knows them is not made of them. This does not erase responsibility; it frees you to act well now instead of being crushed by what was.

Shankaracharya, in the seventeenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on right thinking), concludes the address of verses 75–76, echoing the Katha Upanishad (2.14).
