Upadeshasahasri 17.85

17.85 Shankaracharya

naitaddeyamaśāntāya rahasyaṃ jñānamuttamam | viraktāya pradātavyaṃ śiṣyāyānugatāya ca ||

This secret, highest knowledge is not to be given to one who is not calm; it should be given to one who is dispassionate and to a disciple who follows [the teacher].

Meaning today and context

Deep teaching lands only in a settled, willing mind. If you want to learn, cultivating calm and openness is the first part of the lesson.

Shankaracharya, in the seventeenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on right thinking), says to whom this knowledge should be taught.
