dadataścātmano jñānaṃ niṣkrayo'nyo na vidyate | jñānamicchanbhavettasmādyuktaḥ śiṣyaguṇaiḥ sadā ||

For one who gives the knowledge of the Self there is no other repayment; therefore one who seeks knowledge should always be endowed with the qualities of a disciple.

Some gifts cannot be paid back with money or favours. The only fitting return to a good teacher is to be a sincere, humble learner.

Shankaracharya, in the seventeenth chapter of the Upadeshasahasri (on right thinking), says how a student can repay a teacher of Self-knowledge.
