Upadeshasahasri 18.10

18.10 Shankaracharya

sakṛduktaṃ na gṛhṇāti vākyārthajño'pi yo bhavet | apekṣate'ta evānyadavocāma dvayaṃ hi tat ||

[Opponent:] Even one who knows the meaning of the sentence does not grasp [its truth] when it is said once; he needs something more. That is exactly why we have spoken of two [the sentence and repeated meditation on it].

Meaning today and context

Understanding words is not yet the same as living from their truth. The opponent names a real gap; the question is what closes it.

An opponent who holds that hearing 'Thou art That' is not enough and that repeated meditation (prasaṃkhyāna) on it is required continues: even one who knows what the sentence means does not grasp it at a single hearing.
