Upadeshasahasri 18.101

18.101 Shankaracharya

ahaṃśabdasya yā niṣṭhā jyotiṣi pratyagātmani | saivoktā sadasītyevaṃ phalaṃ tatra vimuktatā ||

Where the word 'I' finally rests, in the light, the inner Self: that very [Self] is declared in 'You are Being'. The fruit of this is liberation.

Meaning today and context

Beneath every 'I am tired, I am a failure, I am a success' is a plain 'I am', aware and present. That is what the teaching points to, and resting there is freedom.

Shankaracharya states what the saying actually refers to: the inner light where the word 'I' finally rests is what 'You are Being' declares, and knowing it is liberation.
