kūṭasthe'pi phalaṃ yogyaṃ rājanīva jayādikam | tadanātmatvahetubhyāṃ kriyāyāḥ pratyayasya ca ||
Even in the immutable [Self] a result is fitting, as victory and the like [are ascribed] to a king, for two reasons: action and notion are for it, and they are not the Self.
Meaning today and context
Things happen in the body and mind and are 'credited' to you, as a battle is credited to a king who never moved. You can own your life responsibly without believing the Self itself is changed by it.
Shankaracharya answers the objection that the unchanging Self cannot have a 'result': as victory won by soldiers is credited to the king, the result of action and cognition is fitly ascribed to the immutable Self, because they serve it and are not the Self.
