ādarśastu yadābhāso mukhākāraḥ sa eva saḥ | yathaivaṃ pratyayādarśo yadābhāsastadā hyaham ||
Just as a mirror, when it holds the reflection, takes the form of the face and seems to be it, so the mirror of the notion, when it holds the reflection [of consciousness], is then [what is called] 'I'.
Meaning today and context
The everyday 'I', anxious and opinionated, is like a face seen in a mirror: real as an appearance, but borrowed. The original face is the awareness lighting it.
Shankaracharya uses the mirror simile: a mirror holding a face's reflection takes on the face's form; likewise the mind's notion, holding the reflection of consciousness, becomes what we call 'I'.
