[Opponent:] Since [the Self] has not yet been realised, an injunction [to meditate], as there is for ritual actions, would not be contradictory, so long as [the Self's] being known has not become firm.
Meaning today and context
The opponent treats self-knowledge like a task with instructions: keep doing it until it sticks.
An opponent who holds that hearing 'Thou art That' is not enough and that repeated meditation (prasaṃkhyāna) on it is required argues that an injunction to meditate is legitimate until the knowledge becomes firm.
