Upadeshasahasri 18.110

18.110 Shankaracharya

ityevaṃ pratipattiḥ syātsadasmīti ca nānyathā | tattvamityupadeśo'pi dvārābhāvādanarthakaḥ ||

Only in this way can the understanding 'I am Being' come about, and not otherwise. [Otherwise] even the teaching 'Thou art That' would be meaningless, for lack of a channel.

Meaning today and context

The mind is not the enemy of self-knowledge but its doorway: understanding happens in the mind, about what the mind reflects.

Shankaracharya draws the consequence of the reflection view: only so can the understanding 'I am Being' arise; without a reflection in the mind there would be no channel, and the teaching 'Thou art That' would be pointless.
