Upadeshasahasri 18.113

18.113 Shankaracharya

buddhau cettatkṛtaḥ kaścinnanvevaṃ pariṇāmitā | ābhāse'pi ca ko doṣaḥ sati śrutyādyanugrahe ||

If [you say] something is done in the intellect by it, then surely [the Self] would be subject to change. And what fault is there in [the view of] reflection, when it has the support of scripture and the rest?

Awareness does not have to act or strain in order to know; it simply shines, and the mind takes on its light. That is why the deepest part of you is never worn out by what you go through.

Shankaracharya presses the opponent: if the Self does something to the intellect, the Self would be changing; the reflection view has no such fault and is supported by scripture and reasoning.
