ābhāse pariṇāmaścenna rajjvādinibhatvavat | sarpādeśca tathāvocamādarśe ca mukhatvavat ||
If [you say] a reflection is [also] a transformation, no: it is like the rope and the rest. So I spoke of the snake and the rest, and of the face appearing in the mirror.
Meaning today and context
A rope mistaken for a snake does not become a snake; a face seen in a mirror does not enter the glass. Your mistaken self-images likewise do not alter what you really are.
To the objection that a reflection is itself a kind of change, Shankaracharya answers with the rope-snake and mirror similes: the rope does not turn into a snake, nor does the face into the mirror.
