Upadeshasahasri 18.117

18.117 Shankaracharya

naivaṃ svapne pṛthaksiddheḥ pratyayasya dṛśestathā | rathādestatra śūnyatvātpratyayasyātmanā grahaḥ ||

Not so, because in dream the notion and the seeing are established separately: since chariots and the like are absent there, the notion [itself] is grasped by the Self.

Meaning today and context

In a dream there is no real chariot, yet a chariot is seen: what is seen is the mind's own image, and something else is seeing it. Your inner images, fears included, are seen by you; they are not you.

Shankaracharya answers from dream: the Brihadaranyaka (4.3.10) says there are no chariots in dream, yet one sees them; so the notion and the seeing of it are known separately, and the notion is grasped by the Self.
