18.118 Shankaracharya

avagatyā hi saṃvyāptaḥ pratyayo viṣayākṛtiḥ | jāyate sa yadākāraḥ sa bāhyo viṣayo mataḥ ||

A notion, pervaded by awareness, arises in the form of an object; the form in which it arises is considered the external object.

Meaning today and context

What you experience as 'out there' reaches you as a shape in the mind, lit by awareness. Noticing this helps you see how much of a situation is the mind's version of it.

Shankaracharya begins analysing ordinary cognition into its parts: a mental notion, pervaded by awareness, arises in the form of an object, and that form is what we call the external object.
