Upadeshasahasri 18.120

18.120 Shankaracharya

yadābhāsena saṃvyāptaḥ sa jñāteti nigadyate | trayametadvivicyātra yo jānāti sa ātmavit ||

That by whose reflection it is pervaded is called the knower. Whoever knows these three, discriminating them here, is a knower of the Self.

Meaning today and context

Self-knowledge is not mystical vagueness but clear sorting: this is the thing, this is my mind's picture of it, and this is the awareness that knows both. The one who sees that clearly is not lost in either.

Shankaracharya completes the analysis: the knower is the one whose reflection pervades the notion; whoever can tell apart object, instrument and knower knows the Self.
