Upadeshasahasri 18.122

18.122 Shankaracharya

ādhibhedādyathā bhedo maṇeravagatestathā | aśuddhiḥ pariṇāmaśca sarvaṃ pratyayasaṃśrayāt ||

Just as the jewel appears different because of different things placed near it, so does awareness; impurity and change, all of it, rests on the notions.

Meaning today and context

A clear crystal next to a red flower looks red, yet is not stained. The 'impurity' you feel in yourself, guilt, envy, agitation, colours the mind, not the awareness behind it.

Shankaracharya gives the crystal simile: a clear jewel looks different colours because of what is placed near it; so awareness seems varied, impure and changing only because of the notions it rests in.
