cetanastvaṃ kathaṃ deha iti cennāprasiddhitaḥ | cetanasyānyatāsiddhāvevaṃ syādanyahānataḥ ||

If [one says], 'You are conscious; how [can you be] the body?', [we answer] no, because [the conscious one] is not established [for him]. Only if the conscious one were established as other [than the body] could it be so, by giving up the other.

'Not the body' is about identity, not a reason to neglect, punish or harm the body. If you feel disgust for your body or think of harming yourself, please reach out: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Simply being told 'you are not your body' does not help unless you can find, in your own experience, the awareness that is aware of the body.

The objector continues: telling someone 'You are conscious, how can you be the body?' will not work, since the conscious one is not established for him; only if it were already known as other than the body could the body be given up.
