[Opponent:] Knowledge born of the senses surely overrides the understanding 'I am Being', which is born of words; and [a person] with firmly rooted impressions is dragged outward by his faults.
Meaning today and context
The world of the senses and our old habits are loud; a quiet truth heard in words can be drowned out by them. This is the opponent's case for practice.
An opponent who holds that hearing 'Thou art That' is not enough and that repeated meditation (prasaṃkhyāna) on it is required argues that sense-perception overrides knowledge that comes from words, and that old impressions keep pulling the mind outward.
