Upadeshasahasri 18.134

18.134 Shankaracharya

adhyakṣasyāpi siddhiḥ syātpramāṇena vinaiva vā | vinā svasya prasiddhistu nājñaṃ pratyupayujyate ||

The establishment of the overseer too would be either by a means of knowledge, or entirely without one. But self-establishment without [a means] is of no use with regard to the ignorant.

Meaning today and context

Being aware is self-evident, yet a confused person still needs teaching to recognise it. Both are true: the Self needs no proof, and we still need a teacher.

Shankaracharya considers how the overseer (the Self) itself is established: either by a means of knowledge or quite without one; but its establishment without one is of no use as far as the ignorant are concerned.
