Upadeshasahasri 18.137

18.137 Shankaracharya

siddhiḥ syātsvātmalābhaścedyatnastatra nirarthakaḥ | sarvalokaprasiddhatvātsvahetubhyastu vastunaḥ ||

If establishment were coming into existence, effort there would be pointless; for it is known to all the world that a thing [comes into being] from its own causes.

A step in a technical argument about terms: proving something is different from producing it.

Shankaracharya rules out the second meaning: if 'establishment' meant coming into existence, the effort [of proving] would be pointless, since everyone knows things come into being from their own causes.
