Upadeshasahasri 18.14

18.14 Shankaracharya

śrutānumānajanmānau sāmānyaviṣayau yataḥ | pratyayāvakṣajo'vaśyaṃ viśeṣārtho nivārayet ||

[Opponent:] Since the cognitions born of scripture and inference have only general objects, perception, whose object is particular, must necessarily ward them off.

Meaning today and context

Concrete experience usually feels more convincing than abstract knowledge. The opponent uses this to argue that the teaching needs to become as vivid as experience.

An opponent who holds that hearing 'Thou art That' is not enough and that repeated meditation (prasaṃkhyāna) on it is required argues that knowledge from words and inference is only general, while perception is particular and therefore stronger.
