Upadeshasahasri 18.145

18.145 Shankaracharya

Perishing [for you] has the unique particular as its limit; perishing is the exclusion of non-perishing. For you, 'cowness' is the non-existence of the non-cow; but that is not the cow's own unique particular.

Meaning today and context

Polemic against a Buddhist theory of meaning; of interest to students of Indian philosophy rather than as counsel.

Shankaracharya continues against the Buddhist theory of exclusion (apoha): if perishing is just the exclusion of non-perishing, and 'cowness' just the absence of non-cows, then neither touches the thing's own unique particular.
