Upadeshasahasri 18.146

18.146 Shankaracharya

kṣaṇavācyo'pi yo'rthaḥ syātso'pyanyābhāva eva te | bhedābhāve'pyabhāvasya bhedo nāmabhiriṣyate ||

Even the thing that would be meant by the word 'moment' is, for you, only the exclusion of something else. And though absence has no difference [in itself], you accept differences [in it] through names.

Technical polemic: if every word means only 'not something else', the Buddhist cannot account for real differences between things.

Shankaracharya points out a consequence of the apoha theory: even 'moment' would only mean the exclusion of something else, and though absence has no inner differences, the Buddhist distinguishes absences by names.
